DANBURY, Conn. - Freshman midfielder Nicola Acocella (Harrison, N.Y) scored the one and only goal of the game with the assistance of junior midfielder Ian Mounts (Middletown, Conn.) to lead the Western Connecticut State University's men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory, advancing their record to an overall 8-3-2, on Sunday night.
The Wolves defeated USMMA in a tough match-up as the first half of the game remained scoreless. Sophomore Jeffrey Norales (Bronx, N.Y.) and freshman Nickolas Santana (New Haven, Conn.) led the Wolves with three shots each. Senior Kadin Talho (Waterbury, Conn.) and junior Maximus Vigo (Canton, Mich.) followed with one shot each. The Wolves racked up a 12-7 advantage in total shots.
USMMA goalie Ethan Howell prevented any goals from scoring in the first half with three saves. Mariner's backup goalie James Castoro was beaten by Acocella for the only goal of the game.
The Wolves are set to take the field when they return to action on October 9, against non-league foe Kean University at 4 p.m. at the Westside Athletic Complex.
