DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Junior
Ian Mounts (Middletown, Conn.) scored the first goal of the game and the game-tying marker to lead the visiting Western Connecticut State University Wolves to a 4-2 win over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs in Little East Conference (LEC) men's soccer action this afternoon at Cressy Field. WestConn improves to 10-3-2 overall and remains perfect in the LEC at 4-0 with its fourth consecutive victory, while the Corsairs fall to 2-7-3 overall and 0-2-2 in the league. WestConn will visit conference foe Eastern Connecticut next on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
The Wolves struck first at the 20:11 mark when junior
Maximus Vigo (Canton, Mich) had his shot saved before Mounts collected the rebound and slotted the ball into the bottom corner to give the visitors the one-goal lead. UMass-Dartmouth evened the score on a goal by Mario Rodriguez in the 52nd minute. Moments later, the Corsairs took the lead when Nate Cordeiro squeezed the ball past WestConn senior goalkeeper Matt Silva (Danbury, Conn.) off the feed from Joey Paiva at the 55:49 mark to put UMass Dartmouth ahead 2-1. The contest quickly opened up as the Wolves responded with three shots including two shots that were blocked.
In the 62
nd minute of action, Mounts netted his second goal of the afternoon to knot the game to 2-2. Vigo regained the lead for the Wolves off the assist from senior
George Cortes (Fairfield, Conn.) at the 70:28 mark to make it 3-2. The Corsairs found themselves down a player after receiving a red card to give the visitors the man-advantage for the last 10 minutes of the game, respectively. Freshman
Nicola Acocella (Harrison, N.Y.) secured Western Connecticut's road victory with his score in the 83rd minute to seal the Wolves win by a final score of 4-2. Silva and junior Zach Benson (Derby, Conn.) combined for three saves, while Ethan Donahue had five saves for the Corsairs.
