GORHAM, Maine - Senior forward
Jaheim Young (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied a double-double with game-highs of 22 points and 14 rebounds to lift the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball squad to a 69-56 victory at the University of Southern Maine in a Little East Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at Hill Gym.
Chance Dixon led the hosts with 14 points while two others joined him in double figures with 10 apiece.
The winners dominated the glass, 43-30, while their bench outscored Southern Maine's, 22-12.
The Wolves pounced on the Huskies to seize an early 10-1 lead. Young capped the flurry with a midrange jumper. However, the hosts countered with a run to even the count up at 17-17 when Dixon nailed a three-pointer. The hosts upped it to a five-point advantage before the visitors recaptured the lead. Graduate student guard Alfonso Stokes (Bloomfield, Conn.) grabbed a rebound and raced down the floor to convert a layup, giving WestConn a 28-27 advantage at halftime. Stokes finished with the contest with 12 points and three steals.
The Wolves took control with a 14-0 second half surge. Sophomore guard
Jaysean Morgan (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) rounded out the run with an offensive putback, putting the winners up 48-35. The Huskies trimmed the margin to six points but would not get any closer as WestConn was able to secure the win.
With the victory, the Wolves improved to 12-2 overall and 5-0 in LEC play, while Southern Maine dropped to 6-7 and 2-3. WestConn will look to extend its win streak to four when they host league opponent Rhode Island College on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
