GORHAM, Maine - Despite a team-high 19 points and game-high three blocks from senior center
Gabrielle Franks (Madison, Conn.), the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team fell at Little East Conference foe Southern Maine, 70-51, on Saturday afternoon at Hill Gym.
Senior guard
Nicole Vivian (New Milford, Conn.) added a double-double on 12 points to go along with a game-high 10 boards. Junior guard
Nicole Peralta (North Windham, Conn.) chipped in with 11 points and a trio of three-pointers.
Liz Cote paced the Huskies with a game-high 21 points, while Tara Flanders and Vanessa Vaughan each notched 10.
The hosts used their depth and hot-shooting en route to the victory. The Southern Maine bench outscored the Wolves bench, 26-2. The Huskies also managed to sink 45 percent of their shots from the floor, while WestConn connected on just 35 percent.
The Wolves jumped out to a quick 4-3 lead on back-to-back shots from junior forward
Alyssa Virtue (Groton, Conn.). However, Southern Maine retaliated to capture a 23-13 advantage heading into the second quarter. They widened the gap to 23 at halftime, 47-24. WestConn couldn't shrink the deficit much in the second half. Franks converted a layup in the paint off a nifty pass from Vivian to round the scoring out at 70-51.
With the loss, the Wolves dropped to 4-10 overall and 0-5 in league play, while the Huskies improved to 6-7 and 4-0. WestConn will look to notch its first LEC win when they host Rhode Island College on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
