Jaheim Young (Brooklyn, N.Y.) notched a game-high 15 points, while rookie guard
C.J. Riley (Yonkers, N.Y.) chipped in with 12 to guide the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball squad to a 79-58 victory over archrival Eastern Connecticut in a Little East Conference matchup on Wednesday night at Feldman Arena. Riley also dished out a game-high six assists.
Junior guard Ty Colloway (Enfield, Conn.) paced the Warriors with 13 points while sophomore forward Jalen Hamblin (West Hartford, Conn.) tacked on 11 while snagging a game-high nine rebounds.Â
The Wolves held the Warriors to just 15 percent shooting from three-point range, while knocking down 40 percent of their shots from beyond-the-arc. The hosts also garnered 25 turnovers while coughing the ball up 16 times.Â
WestConn took an early 15-8 lead when junior forward
James Rhodes (Tarrytown, N.Y.) threw down a thunderous dunk after grabbing the offensive board midway thru the first half. The hosts continued to pile it on when junior guard
Keeshawn Jones (Middletown, N.Y) sank a runner in the lane, building the advantage to 45-20. The Wolves would lead 47-25 at the break.
The Warriors attempted a rally in the second stanza, cutting it to a 10-point advantage when Hamblin converted a three-point play. However, Eastern would not shrink the lead any further as WestConn countered with a staggering 21-6 run. Jones capped the flurry with a trifecta.Â
With the win, the Wolves improved to 11-2 overall and 4-0 in league play, while the Warriors dropped to 3-10 and 0-4. WestConn will look to extend its win streak to three games when they travel to LEC foe Southern Maine on Saturday at 1 p.m.
