official release from Darryl Konicki - LEC Associate Commissioner
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Little East Conference (LEC) announced its 2023 baseball major award recipients Wednesday, following a vote of the conference's head coaches. Three of the LEC's four major awards went to 2023 LEC regular season champion Rhode Island College.
Western Connecticut State University sophomore
Nicholas Moeller (Mahopac, N.Y.) was named to the All-Conference Second Team. Â
This past spring, Moeller batted .295 with a team-high 36 hits, eight doubles and five home runs. He finished his second season with a .484 slugging percentage and drove in a team-best 22 runs for the 9-29 Wolves.
Â
UMass Dartmouth senior shortstop DJ Perron was named the 2023 LEC Player of the Year after leading the LEC in batting average (.431), slugging (.796) and home runs (14). He finished his season ranked second in RBI (46), fourth in hits (59) and seventh in runs scored while starting each of his 37 games played, and sported a .913 fielding percentage, being charged with 14 errors in 161 total chances. Perron is the third Corsair to be named the LEC Player of the Year, the most recent being Ryan Medeiros in 2014.
Â
RIC junior Terry Murray was named the 2023 LEC Pitcher of the Year after going 8-1 with two saves in the regular season, posting a 1.83 ERA with 73 strikeouts over 63 innings of work. He surrendered just 13 runs over his 11 appearances, and did not allow a run in five of those outings. Murray is the second Anchorman to be named the LEC Pitcher of the Year, the first being Andrew Sears last season.
Â
Lucas McElroy was named the 2023 LEC Rookie of the Year after batting .339 with 59 hits, 16 doubles, 40 RBI and 37 runs scored in his first collegiate season. He posted a .930 fielding percentage as the starting second baseman for the Anchormen, being charged with 13 errors in 186 total chances. McElroy is the second consecutive RIC player to be named LEC Rookie of the Year, following teammate Daniel Trzepacz, and the fourth in program history.
Â
RIC head coach Frank Holbrook was named the 2023 LEC Coach of the Year after guiding the Anchormen to the 2023 LEC regular season title with a near-perfect 15-1 league record. RIC finished the season at 30-13 overall, setting a new program record for victories in a season. Holbrook is the first-ever RIC head baseball coach to be named the LEC Coach of the Year.
