Jaheim Young (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and junior guard
Cameron Gallon (York, Pa.) netted 18 points apiece as the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team stormed past host Vermont State University Castleton in a Little East Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at Glenbrook Gym. It marked the second highest offensive outburst for the Wolves this season as they notched their seventh straight victory.
Four other players tallied double figures in scoring for the visitors. Graduate student guard
Alfonso Stokes (Bloomfield, Conn.) notched 15, while junior guard
Justin Morety (Bronx, N.Y.) scored 12. Junior guard
Keeshawn Jones (Middletown, N.Y.) and classmate
Jeremiah Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y.) drained 11 each. Jones added a game-high nine rebounds, while Williams dished out a game-high five assists.
Scott Lampron led the Spartans with a game-high 22 points while Will Radcliff just missed a double-double, finishing with 14 points and nine rebounds.
Once again, the Wolves turned up the defensive pressure, coming away with 16 steals en route to forcing 23 turnovers which translated to 34 points. They gave up the ball just 12 times themselves. WestConn shot 39-of-81 (48 percent) from the floor, while Castleton went just 26-of-64 (40 percent), including 8-of-29 (27 percent) from three-point territory.Â
The winners led wire-to-wire though the contest was close early. Young buried a trifecta giving the Wolves a 14-11 lead early. The hosts evened the count courtesy of a three-pointer from Lampron before WestConn reeled off a 20-7 run midway thru the first stanza. Young began the barrage with another shot from beyond-the-arc before sophomore guard
Jaysean Morgan (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) wrapped up the flurry with a midrange jumper, putting WestConn up, 38-24. Morgan gathered a loose ball in the paint and tallied a buzzer-beating layup, widening the gap to 57-38 at halftime.
It was all Wolves in the second half. The Spartans sliced the deficit to 13 points but would not get any closer. WestConn's largest lead ballooned to 27 points when Morety converted a fast break feed from Jones.Â
With the win, the Wolves improved to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in LEC play, while Castleton sank to 3-6 and 0-2. WestConn will seek to extend the win streak to eight when they head to non-league foe Elms College on Monday night.
