Jaheim Young (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had 15 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists to lead the visiting Western Connecticut State University Wolves to a 90-60 win over the Elms College Blazers in men's basketball action this evening at Picknelly Arena. WestConn improves to 8-1 with its eighth victory in a row and will close the fall semester at home on Friday at 5 p.m. against York (N.Y.). Elms drops to 2-11.
WestConn trailed, 9-8, just over five minutes into the game but rattled off 22 unanswered points to go ahead, 30-9, at the 7:50 mark of the first half on a layup by guard
Alfonso Stokes (Bloomfield, Conn.). Wolves junior
Keeshawn Jones (Middletown, N.Y.) ignited the 22-0 run with back-to-back three pointers. Stokes added a bucket, a steal, and another basket followed by a trey by junior guard Jeremaih Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with seven seconds left that accounted for a 7-0 WestConn spurt over the final 39 ticks of the first half, and the Wolves led, 46-29, at the break.
WestConn steadily increased its lead in the second half, receiving points from 12 different players on its way to its fourth victory of the year by 30 or more points. Junior forward
Cameron Gallon (York, Pa.) and Stokes joined Young in double figures in scoring for the Wolves with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Wolves sophomore forward
Jourdan Belcher (Elmsford, N.Y.) was stellar off the bench with nine points, nine boards, and three steals, while Jones contributed nine points and a team-high five assists. WestConn shot over 52 percent from the floor and 43.8 percent from long range, outrebounded Elms, 42-27, and forced 25 turnovers.
