Big Second Half Lifts Men's Basketball Over Vassar

DANBURY, Conn. - Graduate student guard Alfonso Stokes (Bloomfield, Conn.) netted a game-high 19 points to lead the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team to an 80-58 victory over visiting non-conference opponent Vassar College on Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena.

Classmate forward Jaheim Young (Brooklyn, N.Y.), juniors Cameron Gallon (York, Pa.) and Jeremiah Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in with 15 points apiece. Young also earned a game-high five steals for the Wolves.

Senior forward Logan Scott (Schenectady, N.Y.) was the lone player to reach double figures for the Brewers. He finished with 13 points. Junior guard Luke Adams (Leawood, KS) dished out a game-high five assists.

The hosts forced 26 turnovers while loosing the ball just 11 times. They also dominated the glass, 41-34, while finishing ahead in points in the paint, 46-20.

The first half was close as the lead changed hands five times. WestConn would hold a 37-33 advantage at the break.

They stretched the lead to double digits early in the second half when Gallon converted a layup while being hacked. He would sink the ensuing free throw attempt for the three-point play. Vassar would rally and regain a 49-48 lead when Adams connected on a jumper from the paint. However, the Brewers lead didn't last long as WestConn responded with a 30-4 barrage to put the game away. Young rounded out the run with a layup off a pretty pass from Williams.

With the victory, the Wolves improved to 10-2 overall while Vassar dropped to 3-7. WestConn returns to action when they host Little East Conference archrival Eastern Connecticut on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
