DANBURY, Conn. - Four players netted double figures and the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team put up its highest offensive surge of the season, cruising to a 111-67 victory over visiting non-conference foe York College (N.Y.) on Friday evening at Feldman Arena. Graduate student guard
Alfonso Stokes (Bloomfield, Conn.) led the way with a game-high 18 points, while classmate forward
Jaheim Young (Brooklyn, N.Y.) notched 17. Juniors
Cameron Gallon (York, Pa.) and
Keeshawn Jones (Middletown, N.Y.) chipped in with 13 apiece.
Senior forward Olawale Kila (Lagos, Nigeria) paced the Cardinals with 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Three other players finished with nine points each.
Once again, it was a similar story as the Wolves pounced on the opposing team. This time they forced the Cardinals into 32 turnovers while losing the rock just 16 times themselves. Gallon racked up a game-high six steals, while junior guard
Jaivon Reynolds (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) collected four.
The winners connected on nearly 50 percent of their shots from the floor, while holding York to just a 35 percent clip. The WestConn bench also outscored the limited Cardinals reserves, 48-18.
It was a tightly contested affair in the early going before the Wolves put together a 9-0 run to seize an 18-10 lead midway thru the first half. The Cardinals cut the deficit to 24-20 before the hosts pulled away. They would head into halftime ahead, 48-39. They wouldn't get any closer in the second stanza. WestConn continued to apply pressure and led by as many as 47 in the period.
With the win, the Wolves improved to 9-1 overall while York fell to 2-8. WestConn gets a break before returning to the hardwood when they host the Hat City Classic on Thursday, December 28 against The College of New Jersey. They meet Vassar College in the other matchup.
