BRONX, N.Y. - Despite a team-high 12 points from junior forward
Alyssa Virtue (Groton, Conn.), the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team came up on the short end of a 66-48 decision at the College of Mount Saint Vincent in a non-conference battle to open the season on Wednesday night at Sharp Arena.
Graduate student guard Amber Been (Bronx, N.Y.) paced the Dolphins with game-highs of 16 points and 12 rebounds, while sophomore guard Magan Jackson (Bronx, N.Y.) chipped in with 15 points.
The hosts dominated the interior, finishing ahead in rebounds, 55-34, while also holding a commanding edge in points-in-the-paint, 42-18.
The contest was close in the early going. The Dolphins took a 32-27 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Wolves cut the deficit to three when Virtue connected on a layup before the hosts put together a third quarter run to seize a 60-43 advantage heading into the fourth. However, the Wolves were unable to stage a rally en route to the loss.
With the loss, WestConn moved to 0-1 overall, while Mount Saint Vincent improved to 1-0. The Wolves will seek to pierce the win column when they square up against SUNY Cobleskill in a non-league matchup in their home opener on Sunday at 2 p.m.
