WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Senior
Sophie Leeds (Trumbull, Conn.) tallied the game-winning goal to propel the Western Connecticut State University field hockey team to a 2-1 victory at the University of Saint Joseph in a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon.
The Wolves finished ahead in shots, 9-5, and penalty corners, 10-6. They improved to 2-0 overall while the Bluejays dropped to 0-2.
The hosts jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Devan Fox took a pass and buried her first goal of the year less than three minutes into the contest.
WestConn would hit the post before knotting the count at 1-1 when junior
Alessia Callahan (Glassboro, N.J.) took a feed from senior
Samantha Dultz (Belvidere, N.J) and ripped a shot into the back of the cage shortly before halftime.
After a scoreless third, Leeds took a pass from graduate student
Madison McColl (Rutland, Mass.) and fired home the would-be game-winner early in the fourth.
Senior goalkeeper
Kayla Hnasko (Raritan, N.J) finished with a save to earn the victory for the Wolves. Wendy Bowden notched two stops in the loss for the Bluejays.
WestConn will look to extend the win streak to three games when they travel to Vassar College in a non-league contest on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
