DANBURY, Conn. - After falling to Keene State in double overtime on Saturday, the Western Connecticut State University field hockey team suffered yet another heartbreaking Little East Conference loss as they fell to visiting Framingham State University, 3-2, in two extra sessions on Tuesday night at the Westside Athletic Complex.
WestConn senior goalkeeper
Kayla Hnasko (Raritan, N.J) put forth a stellar effort, turning aside 14 shots. Junior midfielder
Sydney Chenoweth (Baldwinville, Mass.) and sophomore midfielder Reggie Silva (New Milford, Conn.) each netted goals for the Wolves.Â
Junior forward Brandi Core (Medway, Mass.) paced the visitors with two goals and one assist, while classmate Corlene Guenard (Acton, Mass.) dished out a pair of assists. Sophomore Angelina Serra (Chelmsford, Mass.) netted the game-winner less than two minutes into double overtime.Â
The Rams dominated first half play en route to a 2-0 lead at halftime. However, the Wolves came alive in the third and responded with a flurry of shots. They would slice the deficit to 2-1 when Chenoweth took a feed from junior
Alessia Callahan (Glassboro, N.J) and found the back of the cage for her first goal of the season.Â
The hosts continued to apply pressure for the remainder of regulation. They evened the count in the 44th minute of play when Silva gathered a rebound in a scrum and fired the ball into the back of the goal.
WestConn had the first quality scoring chance in the first extra stanza. Callahan rushed up field with the ball but her shot sailed just wide of the post. The visitors made the most of their few overtime chances when Serra blasted home a shot off a penalty corner attempt.Â
With the loss, WestConn dropped to 3-6 overall and 0-4 in league play, while the Rams earned their first LEC win, improving to 4-3 and 1-2. The Wolves will look to respond when they square off against visiting conference rival Castleton University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
