DANBURY, Conn. - Senior goalie
Kayla Hnasko (Raritan, N.J.) was bombarded with 24 shots and made 11 saves, but the Western Connecticut State University field hockey team could not hold off Castleton University in a 3-0 loss at the Westside Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans, now 6-4 overall and undefeated in the Little East Conference at 4-0, were led by junior forward Emily Harris' (Crondall, England) three goals on Saturday.
She opened the scoring at the 21:15 mark after converting a penalty stroke past Wolves substitute keeper
Alyssa Manocchi (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) who came on after the shot from the hash was awarded.
Harris, who now has 16 goals on the season, rattled off two more break-away goals in the second half to put any chance of a WestConn comeback out of reach. With 9:01 left in the final period, she broke free down the left side of the field and stick handled her way 30 yards before hitting the back of the cage. Less than seven minutes later, she worked her way open inside the arch and deposited the game's final tally. Harris finished with 17 of her team's 24 scoring tries.
Castleton finished with a 24-1 advantage in shots at goal and attempted seven penalty corners to the host's single attempt.
Sophie Leeds (Trumbull, Conn.) and
Michelle Lazaro (Norwalk, Conn.) were each credited with a defensive save for the Wolves.
Freshman net minder Zoe Martin (Haverhill, Mass.) did not have to make a save for the winners.
WestConn, now 3-7 overall and 0-4 in the league, travels to University of Massachusetts Dartmouth this Wednesday, October 5 for a 7 pm meeting with the Corsairs.
The Spartans visit Plymouth State University on Wednesday with a 4 pm start time scheduled.
