Box Score READING, Pa. - The Western Connecticut State University football team even its record at 1-1 following Saturday's 28-14 victory at Albright College and a very warm Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore signal caller
John Giller (Massapequa Beach, N.Y.) completed 15 of 24 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns while senior
Chad Blaszky (Selden, N.Y.) rushed 35 times for 132 yards for the winners.
The Wolves used a balanced offensive attack with four different players scoring touchdowns before intermission.
Zachary Soriano got the scoring started when he pulled down a 40-yard touchdown pass from Giller 3:13 into the contest.Â
Anthony Weidtman (Nesconset, N.Y.) added the extra point for the 7-0 lead for the visitors.
At the 6:17 mark of the first stanza, Giller connected with
Julian Ferguson (Enfield, Conn.) from 69 yards out and the point after, this time from
Brian Lombardo (Shirley, N.Y.), gave WestConn a two-score advantage.
Ferguson finished with a game-high 96 receiving yards from three catches.
Midway through the second quarter Giller tossed his third strike, this time a 23-yarder to
Shakespeare Rodriguez (Wallingford, Conn.). The junior wide out had a game-high seven catches for 90 yards for the Wolves.
Junior
Mack Driver (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) closed out the half and the Wolves scoring on the day with a four-yard fun with 1:47 remaining in the first half.
The Wolves closed out the game with a 399-268 advantage in total offense on Saturday.
When the WestConn offense went scoreless in the final 31:47, its defense was stifling.Â
Peter Bencivengo (Meriden, Conn.) and Noah Uzamere (Hempstead, N.Y.) each registered a team-high 11 tackles. Uzamere's were all recorded as solo take downs while Bencivengo assisted on three wrap ups.
Dehlir Adams put Albright on the scoreboard with a one-yard run at the 9:20 mark of the third period.
Lions quarterback Alex Gardsy completed 11 of 24 passes for 104 yards and an 11-yard TD to Antonio Bargiel, with 13:22 left in the game, to close out the scoring.
WestConn continues its three-game season-opening road trip on Friday, September 16 when it faces Westfield State University. Kick-off is slated for 7 pm in southern Massachusetts.
Albright host Misericordia University in is MAC opener on Saturday at noon.
