Alessia Callahan Scores Game Winner Over Manhattanville

DANBURY, Conn. - Junior defender Alessia Callahan (Glassboro, N.J.) scored a pair of goals including the game-winner as the Western Connecticut State University field hockey team came from behind to defeat visiting Manhattanville College, 3-2, at the Westside Athletic Complex on Thursday afternoon.

Callahan scored off the penalty corner stroke from Sophie Leeds (Trumull, Conn.) with 5:24 remaining in regulation.  Her first tally, also off a feed from Leeds, tied the game a 1-1 with 1:02 left in the first stanza.

The Wolves captured the season opener and are now 1-0 in the early going.  The Valiants, which played then entire 60 minutes with 10 players, fall to 0-1.

Manhattanville took an early lead when Abbey Playle (Reading, England) scored an unassisted goal 1:06 into the contest. She later gave the visitors a 2-1 advantage off a helper from Alyssa Monahan (East Fishkill, N.Y.) in the 22nd minutes of play.

Graduate student Madison McColl (Rutland, Mass.) tied the game for the second time when she hit the back of the cage following a short pass from Samantha Dultz (Belvidere, N.J.) 1:03 into the third period.

Senior cage keeper Kayla Hnasko (Raritan, N.J) earned the victory for WestConn after making six saves after entering the game after intermission.

Classmate Alyssa Manocchi (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) allowed both Manhattanville goals in the first 21:50.

Sophomore Cat Morgan (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) suffered the loss in goal for the Valiants.  She made six saves with a pair of stops in each of the final three quarters.

WestConn travels to University of St. Joseph for a non-conference meeting with the Bluejays this Saturday, September 3.  Game time is slated for 1 pm.

Manhattanville continues its play against Little East Conference member University of Southern Maine on Sunday, September 4.  Game time against the Huskies is set for 11 am.
