DANBURY, Conn. - Junior attack
Alexa Riggio (Massapequa, N.Y.) netted a game-high four goals and one assist to lead the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team to a 16-1 victory over visiting Castleton University in a Little East Conference contest on Saturday afternoon.
Other key contributors for the hosts included sophomore
Vicky Gracy (Bethel, Conn.), who tallied a hat trick and one helper, while senior
Dominique DeMarsico (Danbury, Conn.) added two goals and three assists.
WestConn has now won three of its last four games, improving to 8-3 overall and 2-0 in league play, while the Spartans dropped to 1-8 and 0-2.
The hosts began the matchup with a 3-0 run which was capped off by sophomore
Colleen Crotty. The Spartans responded when Kimberly McCarthy quick-sticked a cross-crease feed into the net off a feed from Ryanne Mix, cutting the lead to 3-1. However, it would be the visitor's lone goal of the game.
WCSU responded with another trio of scoring strikes, stretching the gap to 6-1 at the end of the first quarter. WestConn continued to pour it on in the second. Riggio ripped a righty shot into the twine off a fast break feed from DeMarsico. The marker earned the hosts running time with 6:14 left to play in the opening half. They would not relinquish the advantage.
DeMarsico would then add to the lead with her team-leading 32nd goal of the campaign. Riggio would notch her 21st of the season before rookie
Olivia Bookout (Watertown, Conn.) rounded the count out at 16-1 with her second tally of the year for the only goal of the final period.
Junior goalkeeper
Anna Schipf (Babylon, N.Y.) earned the uncontested win for WestConn, while sophomore
Molly Bresnahan (Noank, Conn.) made four stops in relief. Raven Payne recorded 14 saves for Castleton and took the loss.
WestConn will look to keep things rolling when they host non-conference foe Williams College on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
