Gracy & Crotty Notch Hat Tricks in Loss to Williams

DANBURY, Conn. - Despite a pair of hat tricks from sophomores Vicky Gracy (Bethel, Conn.) and Colleen Crotty (Peabody, Mass.), the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team fell to visiting Williams College, 21-8, in a non-conference contest on Wednesday night at the Westside Athletic Complex.

With the loss, WestConn dropped to 8-4 overall while the Ephs improved to 4-6.

Junior attack Shea van den Broek (Darien, Conn.) paced the visitors with a game-high eight points on six goals and two assists. Juniors Lily Warendorf (Norwell, Mass.) and Isabel Arvelo (Moorestown, N.J.) added three goals and two helpers, apiece.

The Ephs would open the game with a 6-1 first quarter run. Van den Broek capped the spurt with her second scoring strike of the game.

WestConn countered with a flurry of its own, shrinking the deficit to 6-4 when senior attack Dominique DeMarsico (Danbury, Conn.) buried her team-leading 39th goal of the campaign. However, Williams responded with an 8-1 surge, widening the gap to 14-5 at halftime. The lone WestConn tally of the second stanza came when Gracy momentarily lost the ball, regained control with a scoop, spun around a defender, and bounced an off-balance shot into the top corner of the net. It was a highlight reel worthy score for her 33rd marker of the year.

WestConn could not put forth a rally in the second half. Williams outshot the hosts by a 36-20 margin and converted 8-of-11 free position attempts. WestConn finished 3-of-5.

After giving up their most goals in a game this season, WestConn will look to recover when they travel to Little East Conference nemesis Keene State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
