DANBURY, Conn. - Sophomore attacker Vicky Gracy (Bethel, Conn.) netted a season-high seven goals and one assist to lead the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team to a 16-5 win over visiting non-league foe St. Joseph's College Long Island on a chilly and wet Tuesday evening at the Westside Athletic Complex.
Senior attacker
Dominique DeMarsico (Danbury, Conn.) chipped in with four goals and two assists, while sophomore
Colleen Crotty (Peabody, Mass.) and senior
Brianna Pota (East Meadow, N.Y.) added two scoring strikes and a helper, apiece, for the hosts.Â
Sophomore attacker Melissa Newman (Patchogue, N.Y.) tallied a pair of goals to lead the Golden Eagles.Â
It was all WestConn from wire-to-wire as they outshot St. Joseph's by a whopping 39-8 margin. The hosts forced the visitors into 21 turnovers while coughing the ball up just six times.Â
Gracy also gathered a game-high seven draw controls, while junior midfielder
Colleen Foley (Kingston, Mass.) collected five.
Gracy got things going with her fourth goal of the season less than two minutes into the contest. DeMarsico would add a pair to put WestConn ahead, 3-0, to end the opening quarter.
The flurry continued with a 6-1 run in the second stanza. Crotty rounded out the half when she tickled the twine off a pretty feed from DeMarsico. The hosts would lead 9-1 at the break.
It was more of the same in the second half as WestConn cruised the rest of the way.
Junior goalkeeper
Anna Schipf (Babylon, N.Y.) improved to 1-0 for the hosts as she stopped two shots in the first half, while sophomore Molly Bresnhan (Noank, Conn.) relieved her for the second half. Junior netminder Jillian Hummel (East Patchogue, N.Y.) took the loss for the visitors while turning aside 11 shots. Chloe Anthony came in and stopped six.Â
WestConn improved to 2-0 overall and will return to action for yet another non-conference matchup when they travel to Worcester State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
