NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - Junior attacker
Alexa Riggio (North Massapequa, N.Y.) netted a game-high five goals to lead the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team to an 11-3 win at non-conference foe SUNY-New Paltz in its season opener on Wednesday afternoon.
Sophomore midfielder
Victoria Gracy (Bethel, Conn.) and senior attacker
Dominique DeMarsico (Danbury, Conn) also added a hat trick apiece. They also dished out two and one assists, respectively. New Paltz had three different players tally goals in the losing effort.
Sophomore netminder
Molly Bresnahan (Noank, Conn.) recorded the win in goal for WestConn while stopping five shots. Hailey Aber finished with six saves for the hosts.
After holding a 2-1 edge to end the first quarter, WestConn put together a 6-0 run in the second stanza. DeMarsico sparked the spurt before Gracy rounded out the run, giving the visitors an 8-1 lead at halftime.
The hosts tallied a pair in the third to trim the deficit to 8-3, but WestConn answered with a three goal spurt to conclude the count at 11-3. WestConn outshot the hosts 25-9 and controlled the majority of play.
They will look to carry the momentum into their home-opener when they square up against St. Joseph's College - LI on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
