DANBURY, Conn. – After blanking Little East Conference rival Plymouth State yesterday, the Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team continued its torrid pace as they upended visiting non-league foe US Merchant Marine Academy, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex.
WestConn senior midfielder
Payton Blynn (New Milford, Conn.) netted the lone goal of the game just 2:05 into the contest. He took a pass from senior
Franz Muhaj (Bridgeport, Conn.) and rushed down the the right side of the field, firing a low shot just inside the left post. It marked his team-leading seventh goal of the season for the hosts.
The Wolves remain undefeated, improving to 14-0 overall while the Mariners dropped to 4-4-5.
Despite what the final score would indicate, WestConn dominated play. They outshot the Mariners by a 24-4 count and also racked up 11 corner kicks while the visitors collected just two.
The Wolves had several quality scoring chances but were unable to tack on the insurance tally. In the second half, rookie backer
Nikolas Chevres (Miami, Fla.) dribbled, twisted and spinned thru a trio of defenders and fired a pass into the box that was chipped wide. If connecting with the twine, it may have been the WestConn highlight goal of the year.
All three WCSU goalies saw playing time, combining for three saves.
WestConn will look to keep things rolling when they head to non-conference opponent Drew University on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
