Alessia Callahan (Glassboro, N.J.) scored the game-winning goal with 3:36 remaining in overtime to lead the Western Connecticut State University field hockey team to a thrilling 2-1 victory over visiting Salem State University at the Westside Athletic Complex on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon.
WestConn, now 5-9 overall and 2-7 in the Little East Conference, trailed 1-0 after Melanie Mason (Beverly, Mass.) broke free down the right side of the field and deposited her team-leading seventh goal of the season at the 28:14 mark.
The Vikings advantage did not last long as
Sydney Chenoweth (Baldwinville, Mass.) deflected a blast from
Samantha Dultz (Belvidere, N.J.) into the Vikings cage at the 29:54 mark.
Senior goalie
Alyssa Manocchi (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) earned the start for the Wolves and recorded seven saves. She improves her season record to 2-1 in her final campaign.
Salem State's Carson Reidy (Burlington, Mass.) suffered the loss and made five stops.
The Vikings drop to 4-10 on the season and 2-8 in the LEC.
WestConn travels to Fitchburg State University on Tuesday, October 25 for a 6 pm meeting with the Falcons.
