DANBURY, Conn. - Western Connecticut State University's
Madison McColl (Rutland, Mass.) scored the game-tying goal with 6:48 remaining in regulation, but Eastern Connecticut State University's Emma Sanson (Thomaston, Conn.) knotched the game-winner with 44 seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Warriors to a 2-1 victory at the Westside Athletic Complex on Tuesday afternoon.
The Wolves fall to 4-9 overall and 1-7 in the Little East Conference while the Warriors keep their LEC post-season hopes alive at 6-8 overall and 3-6 in league action. They have to virtually win their remaining three games and hope that one of three teams above them close out the regular season at least at 5-6 in conference play. Then LEC Assistant Commissioner Darryl Konicki will have to figure out any tie-breakers that exist.
McColl, a graduate student scored her second goal of the season off a feed from
Alessia Callahan (Glassboro, N.J.)
Eastern Connecticut took a 1-0 advantage at the 15:54 mark when Grace Mangiameli (Suffield, Conn.) scored an unassisted tally after breaking away from the Wolves defense and beating senior cage keeper
Kayla Hnasko (Raritan, N.J.).
Hnasko finished with nine saves and faced 21 shots from the winners.
Senior Erin Fainer (Thomaston, Conn.) earned the victory in goal for ECSU but did not have to make a stop of WestConn's six scoring attempts.
WestConn, which was eliminated from LEC tournament contention with today's loss, will play host to Salem State University this Saturday, October 22. It will celebrate Senior Day prior to the 1 pm start with the Vikings.
