DANBURY, Conn. - Junior midfielder
Kent Eannarino (Brookfield, Conn.) dished out a pair of nifty assists as the Western Connecticut State University men's soccer squad blanked visiting Castleton University, 2-0, in a Little East Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon.
It marked the seventh shutout of the season for the Wolves, who improved to 12-0 overall and 4-0 in league play. The Spartans dropped to 3-4-2 and 1-1-1.
The hosts dominated first half play as they outshot the visitors by an 11-2 margin. WCSU missed converting on several high quality scoring chances in the opening minutes. However, Eannarino threaded a pass across the box to rookie forward
Erik Lorent (Shelton, Conn.), who then fired a sharp-angled shot into the back of the twine 11:45 into the contest. It was Lorent's fifth goal of the season.
The Spartans played tougher in the second half but WestConn still managed to finish ahead in shots for the game, 23-3. The hosts also maintained a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks.Â
The Wolves added an insurance tally with less than two minutes remaining when senior forward
Franz Muhaj (Bridgeport, Conn.) took a beautiful midfield pass from Eannarino and raced toward the goal to notch his fourth goal of the year.Â
WestConn goalie
Zachary Benson (Milford, Conn.) improved to 9-0 and stopped one shot, while Castleton senior netminder Andres Soto-Burgos (Bronx, N.Y.) kept the visitors in the game with some spectacular saves. He fell to 2-4-2 and finished with seven saves.
The Wolves have the week to regroup before they host LEC opponent Plymouth State on Saturday at Noon.
