Women's Volleyball Outlasts Vassar, Falls to Scranton on Day Two of Scranton Tournament

SCRANTON, Penn. - After falling to Lebanon Valley on Day One yesterday, the Western Connecticut State University women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on Day Two of the Scranton Invitational. WestConn fell to the tournament hosts, 3-1 (21-25, 25-11, 25-21, 25-23) during morning session before rebounding to outlast Vassar College, 3-2 (17-25, 25-13, 25-7, 22-25, 15-7) in the afternoon match.

Senior Ali Brochu (Winsted, Conn.) paced WestConn with 10 kills in the opening loss to Scranton, while graduate student Victoria Alomar (Naranjito, P.R.) racked up six service aces. After jumping ahead to a hard fought 1-0 lead, WestConn seemed to lose a bit of steam in the second set. However, they played Scranton tough in both the third and fourth sets en route to the loss.

Senior Abi Debes (New Milford, Conn.) tallied a match-high 14 kills without committing a single error to lead WestConn to the win over non-league foe Vassar in the afternoon contest. Graduate student Victoria Korzan (Southbury, Conn.) also put forth an outstanding effort, chipping in with 12 kills and a .375 hitting percentage. Debes was also a force on the defensive side, adding six solo blocks. Junior setter Rory McMaster (Canton, Mich.) set up her teammates with a match-high 40 assists.

With the split, WestConn moved to 2-2 overall. They return to action against visiting non-conference foe Farmingdale State on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
