WILLIMANTIC, Conn. - Graduate student
Victoria Alomar (Naranjito, P.R.) smashed a season-high 16 kills to lead the Western Connecticut State University women's volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-23, 15-25, 25-14, 25-22) victory at cross-state archrival Eastern Connecticut on Wednesday evening at Geissler Gymnasium.
It was a solid well-rounded effort from the visitors. Junior setter
Rory McMaster (Canton, Mich.) handed out a match-high 38 assists, while graduate student
Ali Brochu (Winsted, Conn.) added 15 kills and senior middle hitter
Abbi Debes (New Milford, Conn.) contributed nine floors to go along with a match-high six blocks.
WestConn trailed 12-8 in the opening set before rallying to capture it. Brochu put the 25-23 opening win away off a nifty feed from McMaster.
Eastern rebounded to coast to a second set victory before WestConn retaliated with a 25-14 win in the third. The fourth set was as tightly contested as the opener. WestConn jumped out to a 9-4 lead before Eastern rallied to seize a 13-10 advantage.
However, the visitors displayed their tenacity as they came from behind with Alomar notching back-to-back kills to cement the match victory.
With the win, WestConn improved to 9-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play, while the Warriors fell to 9-2 and 2-1.
WestConn returns to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. against visiting LEC foe Castleton University before squaring up against Salem State later in the afternoon.
