Box Score 2 DANBURY, Conn. The Western Connecticut State University men's and women's tennis teams wrapped up the regular season with victories over visiting Castleton University at Westside Courts on Friday night.
For the men, a depleted Spartans roster aided in the team shut out as they were forced to hand over five of the nine challenges. Each of the four matches were won via straight-set victories.
Seniors
Matthew Carino (Sandy Hook, Conn.) and
Myckland Cothias (Danbury, Conn.) blanked Rowan Kidder and Luke Cohen, 8-0 in the only doubles match played.
Classmate
Aaron Campos (Ridgefield, Conn.) defeated Kidder at top singles, 6-0, 6-0.
WestConn's
Will Hogan (Ridgefield, Conn.) and
Jerry Narcisse (Norwalk, Conn.) defeated Cohen and Rafael Robes, respectively, 6-0, 6-0.
"Today was a bittersweet, but good day as we celebrated the final regular season match for our four seniors and empowered them with lineup input," said WestConn head coach
Shawn Stillman. "As expected, they did a wonderful job. It was also difficult for Castleton today as they had a limited roster. Much credit to their players that showed up today. We turn the page on our challenging regular season and now focus on the conference playoffs ahead."
WestConn's women defaulted three matches due to conflicts with classes on Friday afternoon.
In singles action,
Julia Misner (Meriden, Conn.) and
Sarah Silva (Brookfield, Conn.) earned victories, while
Chelsea Von Elm (Somers, N.Y.) lost a tight match.
Misner defeated Grace Sharkey at third singles, 6-0, 7-5 while Silva cruised a top solos, 6-3, 6-0 over Regina Marchese.
Camille Jackson defeated Von Elm, 6-3, 6-4 at fourth flight singles
With the score at 2-4, senior
Lesley Coronel (Danbury, Conn.) battled in her final college match at #2 singles. After dropping the first set in a tiebreaker, she overcame Aliza Bogner in three sets, 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-2.
Trailing 3-4 and needing both doubles courts to win the match, Silva and Misner partnered at #1 and defeated Marchese and Mia Manheimer, 8-3 and knotted the match at 4-4.
For the final match of the evening, Coronel returned to action joining Von Elm at #2 doubles to determine who will win the match. After falling down 0-4 to Sharkey and Jackson, WestConn battled back winning eight straight games and clinching the overall team victory, 8-4.
"What an exciting way to end a very difficult regular season," acknowledged Stillman. "The ladies have dealt with a lot of adversity this season and deserve a lot of credit for their fight and spirit today. They don't give up. Todays match is definitely the highlight of the season. We will enjoy this win together."
