DANBURY, Conn. —
Erickah Tertulien (Norwalk, Conn.) battled through a three-set singles victory at No. 1 but the Western Connecticut State University women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 Little East Conference (LEC) match against Plymouth State University Panthers on Saturday. The Wolves dropped to 3-10 overall and 1-6 in the LEC, while the visitors improved to 2-7 and 1-5.
In singles, needing four of six courts, the Wolves started out strong in the beginning and won a couple of first sets.
Aylina Razeq (Danbury, Conn.) at No. 5 Singles won her first set, and Tertulien won her first set in a tiebreaker (6-7 (5)) at No. 1 Singles. Razeq took the first set 6-3, but Maddie Lorenz evened it up to force a third. She played a close match but ultimately fell 10-6. Tertulien dropped the second set 6-4, but rallied back for a dominant 10-4 third-set victory to secure the Wolves' lone point.
Kate Robinson (Brookfield, Conn.) at No. 6 and at No. 3
Eilynn Pierre (Queens Village, N.Y.) lost close first sets. But, momentum turned around after a 20-minute rain delay.
Ava Ciampi (Wolcott, Conn.) at No. 2 Singles and at No. 4
Jessica Nyitrai (Trumbull, Conn.) lost followed by a loss by Robinson at No. 6 to clinch PSU's win.
"We didn't start out the match strong during doubles, but recovered and performed better in singles," head coach Shawn Stillman said. "Unfortunately, we were only able to pull out one of them."
