DANBURY, Conn. — Despite seniors
Aylina Razeq (Danbury, Conn.) and
Jessica Nyitrai (Trumbull, Conn.) winning at Doubles on Senior Day, the Western Connecticut State University women's tennis team fell 7-0 to Little East Conference (LEC) opponent UMass Dartmouth on Saturday at the Westside Tennis Courts. WestConn concluded the season 3-7 overall and 1-7 in the LEC for the eighth spot in the standings, while the Corsairs improved to 8-5 and 5-3 for the fourth seed.
In doubles, the two seniors of Razeq and Nyitrai paired together at No. 2 and won 6-4. At No. 1 Doubles,
Erickah Tertulien (Norwalk, Conn.) and
Ava Ciampi (Wolcott, Conn.) were a single point away from forcing a tiebreaker in their match but they lost it and clinched the first point for UMD.
In singles, at No. 2 Ciampi battled to through a tough three-set loss. The sophomore took the first set in a strong 6-3 victory over Sofia Beltran, but Beltran rallied back in the second for a 6-3 win for the tie. In the third set, Ciampi kept her opponent on her toes, but unfortunately fell 10-5. Razeq came back from a 1-5 deficit in the second set to force a tiebreaker at No. 5 Singles, but she eventually dropped in a 7-6 (3) loss.
" We really wanted to finish our season with a win for a great group of ladies. They worked very hard all season to improve and it shows," head tennis coach Shawn Stillman said. "We will miss Jessica and Aylina. They mean a lot to our team."
