Eric Caldwell Breaks Goals Record In Win Over Castleton... Now Has 170 Career Goals

DANBURY, Conn. - Despite back-to-back shortened seasons due to the Covid-19 pandemic, senior attack Eric Caldwell (East Moriches, NY) broke the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse all-time goal-scoring record.  On Saturday, which was Senior Day and the first time WestConn parents were allowed into the Westside Athletic Complex since 2020, the burly Long Island native scored four goals in the Colonials 27-7 victory over visiting Castleton University and now has 170 career markers.  He surpasses Adam Lanehart who scored 169 goals from 2007 to 2010.

Caldwell finished with a pair of assists for six total points and collected a pair of ground balls against the Spartans.

Sophomore Stephen Cicchetti (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) led all scorers with six goals while five other Colonials tallied two goals.  Timothy Yannucci (Coram, N.Y.), Zak Santoemma (Madison, Conn.), Donald Schaumloffel (West Islip, N.Y.) and Benjamin Hawthorne (Manorville, N.Y.) each tickled the twine twice in the victory.

The Colonials, now 3-2 overall and in the Little East Conference, finished with a 68-36 shot advantage.

Senior Perry Cassidy (East Setauket, N.Y.) earned the victory in goal for WestConn.  In three quarters, he made eight saves while allowing just four goals.  Justin Tarsi (Danbury, Conn.) and Sean Young (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) finished up the goal-keeping duties in the final stanza.  Tarsi made a pair of stops while Young was unchallenged in the closing minutes.

For Castleton, now 0-9 overall and 0-3 in the LEC, Chris LaBonte (Essex Junction, Vt.) and Hunter Sarro (North Attleboro, Mass) each scored a hat trick in the loss.  Senior Trey Lang (Bennington, Vt.) added the Spartans sixth goal as time drew to a close in the game.

Maxx Ingison (Manchester, Vt.) took the loss in net for the Spartans.  He made 12 saves and yielded 13 goals in the first 30 minutes.  Chris Wilk (Rutland, Vt.) took over for the second half and made five saves.

WestConn closes out the regular season at Plymouth State University on Thursday, April 29.  It is sure to be a chilly 7 pm face off in upstate New Hampshire.  Castleton plays host to Eastern Connecticut State University on Wednesday, April 28 at 4 pm.

SENIOR DAY:  WestConn celebrated the careers of its eight seniors prior to today's game.  Honored (in order of the pre-game festivities) were Caldwell, Nathan Spencer (Wallkill, N.Y.), Sean Yorke (St. James, N.Y), Yannucci, Cassidy, Matthew Chibbaro (Poughquag, N.Y.), Max Gironda (East Setauket, N.Y.) and Santoemma.
