Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's Lacrosse Edged at UMass-Boston, 19-15

BOSTON, Mass. - The last time the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team stepped onto James Cotter Field was nearly two years ago. UMass-Boston escaped with a narrow win on their home field in the regular season finale as both squads endured torrential rain and lightning delays. The Colonials entered Thursday nights matchup seeking to avenge that loss. Despite senior Eric Caldwell's (East Moriches, N.Y.) four goals and sophomore Trey Aronow's (Holbrook, N.Y.) game-high six assists, WestConn fell to the Beacons, 19-15.

Senior Timothy Yannucci (Coram, N.Y.), junior Jesse Weaver (Highland, N.Y.) and sophomore Stephen Cicchetti (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) each added two goals for the visitors. Gavin Admirand paced the hosts with six goals and two assists, while Conor Lenfest notched five goals and one helper. Donovan Prozinski chipped in with four scoring strikes.

With the loss, the Colonials dropped to 2-2 overall and 2-2 in league play, while UMass-Boston improved to 4-0 and 4-0.

The Beacons controlled the majority of possession as they won 37 of 38 faceoff opportunities. They also won the ground ball battle, 46-15.

The hosts notched the first goal of the game before WestConn netminder Perry Cassidy (East Setauket, N.Y.) decided to contribute on the offensive end with a scoring strike of his own following a clear. Lenfest would find the back of the net with 23 seconds left in the opening quarter, giving UMass-Boston a 6-4 advantage.

The hosts stretched the advantage to 8-4 before the visitors rallied to slice it to 8-7 when Caldwell tickled the twine off a feed from Aronow. The Beacons continued to win faceoffs which helped them build a 13-10 halftime lead.

Once again, WestConn trimmed the deficit to one goal when Cicchetti took a skip pass from Weaver and ripped a shot into the top corner for a man-up goal with 9:19 remaining in the contest. However, the Beacons answered with three straight before Caldwell notched his team-leading 13th goal of the season. Prozinski would add an insurance marker to round the scoring out at 19-15.

Cassidy fell to 2-2 en route to a 16-save performance, while Trevor Koppy earned the win for UMass-Boston and stopped seven shots.

The Colonials return to action against visiting conference foe Castleton on Saturday at 1 p.m.
