Box Score 2 CASTLETON, V.T. - The Western Connecticut State University men's and women's tennis teams put forth dominating performances on Saturday afternoon at Castleton University. The Colonial men tallied a convincing 9-0 win over the Spartans, while the women notched an equally impressive 7-2 victory.
Due to poor weather, the dual match was moved indoors and played on four courts, and the total length of the combined matches was 6.5 hours.
Freshman
Kevin Tenesaca debuted at #3 singles and earned his first collegiate victory with a 6-2, 6-0 score for the Colonials.
"Very pleased with our win today. We were missing two of our top three starters and everyone did their part, stepping in nicely to fill their spots," stated WestConn head coach
Shawn Stillman.Â
The women picked up their first of the season. They began the match winning all three doubles courts, with sophomore
Julia Misner (Meriden, Conn.) and senior
Maria Madden (Rhinebeck, N.Y.) earning their first collegiate victories.
Misner kept her win streak going by notching victory in her singles match and clinching the overall team victory, going 2-0 for the day.
Sophomore
Sarah Silva (Brookfield, Conn.) and senior
Lesley Coronel (Danbury, Conn.) teamed together to win at #1 doubles and came back to win both of their singles matches, after falling behind a set early in the match. Graduate student
Chelsea Von Elm's (Somers, N.Y.) season debut was successful with her #3 doubles win and blanking her opponent at #6 singles.
"The ladies needed this win today. They've been working hard and earned today's victory. Even with the two courts we lost, that could have gone either way. I'm proud of their performance," concluded Stillman.
WestConn returns to action at Rhode Island College on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
