Women's Lacrosse Utilizes Well-Balanced Attack to Blank RIC, 18-0

DANBURY, Conn. - 12 different players registered goals as the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team blanked visiting Rhode Island College, 18-0, in a Little East Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex. Junior Dominique DeMarsico (Danbury, Conn.) and sophomore Alexa Riggio (North Massapequa, N.Y.) each tallied hat tricks for the Colonials in the winning effort. Senior Caroline Galligan (Marshfield, Mass.) and junior Brianna Pota (East Meadow, N.Y.) chipped in with two goals apiece.

The hosts dominated play outshooting the visitors by a 45-2 margin, while also holding a commanding edge in ground balls, 23-5. Additionally, the Colonials were a perfect 12-for-12 on clear attempts, while forcing the Anchorwomen into 22 turnovers.

"We played collectively as a unit today. We have a big week ahead of us and this game was part of the preparation," said WestConn head coach Meghan Els. "I'm proud of the way our girls worked together today," she concluded.

Galligan - who earned LEC Offensive Player of the Week accolades earlier in the week - notched the first goal of the contest off a feed from rookie attacker Victoria Gracy (Bethel, Conn.) less than two minutes in. Gracy received Rookie of the Week honors as well. DeMarsico would net all three of her scoring strikes in the first half as WestConn seized an 11-0 advantage heading into the break.

It was more of the same in the second half. Junior attacker Brigid Schulenburg (Rocky Hill, Conn.) would round the count out at 18-0.

A trio of WestConn netminders combined for one save as sophomore Anna Schipf (Babylon, N.Y.) improved to 3-0. Sophomore goalie Shannon O'Connell (Narragansett, R.I.) dropped to 1-2 for RIC and finished with 14 saves.

With the win, the Colonials improved to 3-0 overall and 3-0 in league play, while the Anchorwomen fell to 1-2 and 0-2. WestConn returns to action at archrival Eastern Connecticut on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
