Box Score DANBURY, CT – Rookie midfielder Kaleigh Panek (Shelton, CT) netted a game-high two goals to lead the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team to a 4-0 shutout over visiting non-conference foe Lehman College on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Colonials improved to 9-6 overall, extending their win streak to eight games, while the Lightning dropped to 6-4-1.
"We played well and were able to see some of our younger players in action," stated WestConn head coach Alex Harrison following the action.
The Colonials dominated all facets of the contest, outshooting the Lightning, 24-4, while also coming away ahead in corner kicks, 4-0.
The hosts broke the ice just 10:22 into the contest when Panek gained control of a loose ball for a breakaway goal. Shortly thereafter, she netted her team-leading ninth goal of the season, capitalizing on a Lehman misplay and tapping the ball into an open net, giving WestConn a 2-0 lead at the break.
Junior Jasmine Grey (Naugatuck, CT) took a corner kick feed from classmate Jenna Barron (New Milford, CT) and buried her second goal of the year in the 56th minute. Senior Aileen Maloney (Trumbull, CT) rounded the scoring out at 4-0 in the 74th minute when she blasted home a penalty shot after being pulled down in the box.
Sophomore goalkeeper Alexis Lainchbury (Hopewell Junction, NY) improved to 5-6 overall, while rookie Samantha Camacho (Bridgeport, CT) came on in relief. Lehman sophomore Rebecca Gritz (Bronx, NY) dropped to 6-4-1 and finished with 14 saves.
WestConn returns to action against visiting non-league opponent Worcester State on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
