Box Score DANBURY, CT - The Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team, behind goals from Autumn Sorice (Bethel, CT) and Bailey Julian (Simsbury, CT), defeated visiting University of Massachusetts, 2-0 at The Westside Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore goalie Serena Gunter (Jewett City, CT) made her first career start for the Colonials and recorded a shut out while making two saves.
Sorice registered her team-leading 15th goal of the season when she broke away from the Beacons' defense and deposited the ball in the back of the net at the 6:23 mark.
Just inside of the 21st minute Sorice set up freshman Bailey Julian (Simsbury, CT) with her fifth goal of the year.
The was all the scoring the Colonials would need, and get, on the afternoon, but they controlled the full 90 minutes and out-shot UMass Boston, 34-3.
Alyssa Fugiel (Easthampton, MA) withstood the barrage of attempts from Western and made 17 saves on the afternoon.
Western, now 11-4-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the LEC, travels to non-conference foe Stevens Tech on Tuesday, October 25. Game time is set for 6 pm in Hoboken, NJ. The Colonials will celebrate senior day next Saturday, October 29 when they play host to University of Southern Maine in the regular-season finale. The whistle blows at noon.
The Beacons, now 3-11-2 overall and 1-4-1 in the league, travel to Bridgewater State University for a 7 pm tilt on Tuesday.
The Colonials have secured nothing lower than a third seed in the upcoming Little East Conference Tournament, which begins on Tuesday, November 1.
