Autumn Sorice scores goal and assists on another as Western hold on to beat Wentworth, 2-1

Box Score

DANBURY, CT - Sophomore midfielder Autumn Sorice (Bethel, CT) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 59th minute and the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team held on for a 2-1 victory over visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology at the Westside Athletic Complex on Monday night.

The Colonials, now 7-4 and winners of four straight, took an early lead when senior Sarah Menta (Newington, CT) notched her third goal of the season.  She was set up on the right side of the 12-yard box by a pass from Sorice just 5:07 into the contest.

Nearly 14 minutes into the second half, Sorice gathered the ball inside the box after a Leopard defender lost control while attempting to clear the ball.  Sorice then turned and rolled the ball inside the left post.  It was her third marker of the season.

Wentworth, now 5-4-1, drew within a goal in the 78th minute when Mary Pastorelli (Whitesboro, NY) blasted a shot from 65 yards out.  The ball skipped on the turf and bounced over the head of Western keeper Jillian Fernandez (Columbia, CT).

The Leopards applied significantly more offensive firepower in the final 45 minutes after being outshot 12-5 in the first stanza.  They won the battle of corners on the night, 5-2, four of those coming after the break.

Fernandez earned the win in goal for Western after making six saves.

Nicole Leahey (Warwick, RI) made four saves for Wentworth.

The Colonials get right back at in this Wednesday when they play host to another non-conference opponent, Worcester State University.  Game time is slated for 7 pm at The WAC.
