Celia DeVoe scores game-winning goal and assists two others in Western's 3-2 win over UMass Boston

Box Score

DANBURY, CT - Sophomore midfielder Celia DeVoe (Farmington, CT) scored the game-winning goal 2:37 into the second half and assisted on the Colonials two other goals as the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team defeated University of Massachusetts Boston, 3-2 at The WAC on Saturday afternoon.

Western improves to 11-4 overall and sits atop the Little East Conference standings at 4-0.  It has now won eight straight games and nine of its last 10.

All of Western's goals on Saturday came off of free kicks from the the elder DeVoe.

From 30 yards out, Celia found her younger sister Andrea DeVoe (Farmington, CT) in the middle of the 12-yard box and the freshman headed the ball home to get things started in the 15th minute of play.

The Beacons, now 6-3-3 overall and 3-1 in the LEC, tied the game in the 33rd minute when speedy forward Krista Ledin (Bridgewater, MA) put away her team-leading 10 goal of the season.  She was set up by a combination of passes, started from a corner kick from Amanda Pugliese (Pembroke, MA) then served in to the box from Hannah Petersen (Plymouth, MA).

Exactly four minutes later at the 37:17 mark, Ledin added an unassisted goal when she tucked the ball in to the right of Western keeper Jillian Fernandez (Columbia, CT).

Senior midfielder Sarah Menta (Monroe, CT), who has been hampered with a leg injury this season, finished off a free kick from Celia DeVoe with 2:43 remaining before intermission.

DeVoe's game-winner, again off a set piece, this time from 40 yards away, sailed over the outstretched mitt of UMass Boston netminder Kristen Spain (Quincy, MA) and into the onion bag.  It was her third game-winning goal of the season.

Celia DeVoe's four points against the Beacons ties her with Menta for the team lead with 12.

Fernandez, just a freshman, was solid in goal again for the Colonials.  She made two saves while Spain made six saves for the Beacons.

Western plays host to University of Southern Maine next Saturday, October 18 at The WAC.  Game time is 12 noon.  UMB travels to Endicott for a 7 pm game on Tuesday, October 14
