DANBURY, Conn. —
Jaelyn Moulton (Stafford Springs, Conn.) and
Alyssa Montalvo (Holbrook, N.Y.) clinched the win nine minutes into overtime for the Western Connecticut State University field hockey team at the Westside Athletic Complex on Wednesday against the visiting William Paterson University Pioneers. Montalvo scored the game-winner off a pass from Moulton 39 seconds left in OT. The Wolves improved to 4-3 on the season, while the visitors dropped to 0-4 overall.
After a scoreless first quarter, Moulton put the Wolves on the board off a well-executed penalty corner by Montalvo. In the 24th minute, the hosts drew a corner, which was inserted by Montalvo, who sent the ball straight to Moulton at the top of the scoring circle for a long pass through traffic in a left-corner connection. The Wolves held onto the one-goal advantage until the final 55 seconds of regulation, when Adriana Mancuso capitalized on a Pioneers' penalty corner for the 1-1 tie to force overtime.
Samantha Leonard (Beacon Falls, Conn.) intercepted a passing miscue by the Pioneers in the WestConn's end. Leonard directed the ball straight to Moulton, who spun around a defender to maintain possession before passing it to a sprinting Montalvo along the right side of the circle for the 2-1 Wolves victory.Â
WestConn hits the road to face non-conference opponent Drew University for a noon game on Saturday.
