MADISON, N.J. - The visiting Western Connecticut State University Wolves scored three goals in the fourth quarter, but were beaten, 5-4, by the Drew University Rangers in field hockey action this afternoon. WestConn falls to 4-4 and Drew picks up its first win against five losses. The Wolves will host Ramapo next on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Junior
Jaelyn Moulton (Stafford Springs, Conn.) had a goal and an assist for WestConn.
Drew's Liriana Seferovic scored twice, both off feeds by Ellie Kopec, and peppered WestConn freshman goalkeeper
Brooklyn Testa (Danbury, Conn.) with three other shots-on-goal, while WestConn did not attempt a shot in the first 15 minutes. Kopec scored two goals in the second frame, the second assisted by Seferovic, before the Wolves earned three penalty corners and Moulton fired off the first WestConn shot of the game, which was blocked, with 17 seconds left before halftime.
WestConn rookie
Erin Frank (Westbury, N.Y.) got the visitors on the board 5:12 into the third quarter, converting on a feed by Moulton, but neither squad could put a shot on target in the entire third frame. WestConn earned a penalty corner in the opening moments of the fourth stanza and Moulton drew a penalty stroke 1:15 into the period, which she sent past Drew goalie Vanessa Pennella to make the score, 4-2. Drew Bella scored for the Rangers with 11:56 on the clock to push the home lead back to three.
WestConn senior
Madison Preston (Brookfield, Conn) answered with a Wolves goal just 26 seconds later and senior
Grace Gundeck (Danbury, Conn.) scored with 7:50 on the clock to make it a one-goal game. The Wolves did not fire a shot the rest of the way, however, and Pennella escaped with the win in the Rangers cage despite making just one save. Testa had seven stops for the Wolves.
