CASTLETON, Vt. — In the 22nd minute, Delaney Israel (Medford, N.Y.) drew a penalty kick for the eventual game-winning goal in the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team's shutout of the University of Vermont State Castleton on Saturday to open Little East Conference action. The Wolves improved to 3-1-2 and 1-0 in the league, while Castleton dropped to 1-4 and 0-1.

Israel snuck the ball just past the reaching hand of Spartans' goalkeeper Ella Hall for a low, to-the-right goal to put the Wolves up 1-0. Israel took the ball away from the Castleton offense before sending it to Lubriza Alfaro (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) at the 25-yard line in the Wolves' scoring zone. Alfaro quickly corralled the ball for a short pass to Scarlett Kovarczi (Shelton, Conn.) who drilled a long shot from the 20-yard line for a high, dead-center goal.

Gracen Regan (Monroe, N.J.) stopped a pair of host shots, while Hall sent away a dozen by the Wolves.

WestConn stays on the road for a non-conference match against Farmingdale State College on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
