WILLIMANTIC, Conn. - Senior attack
Madison Ratchford (Ridge, N.Y.) ripped seven goals while junior midfielder
Isabella Pota (East Meadow, N.Y.) chipped in with four scoring strikes and one assist as the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse squad erupted in the second half to blow by Eastern Connecticut, 17-6, Wednesday evening at Rick McCarthy Field.
Three other Wolves contributed two goals apiece, while Alexa Vizzini paced the Warriors with a hat trick and one helper.Â
The hosts took control early and would move ahead 3-1 early in the second quarter when Jenna Mahoney buried her second marker of the contest. However, the Wolves answered with a staggering 7-1 run to seize control. Ratchford sparked the barrage late in the stanza before she canned her team leading 64th goal of the season to round out the flurry in the third quarter, giving WestConn an 8-4 advantage.
The Wolves would not hold back the rest of the way. Ratchford continued to pile up the points as she upped her team-leading mark to 68 goals. Pota also racked up more tallies en route to 63 on the season. Sophomore midfielder
Kyla Murnane (Bethpage, N.Y.) closed out the scoring with a pair of twine ticklers.Â
With the victory, WestConn improved to 12-3 overall and 7-0 in conference play, while Eastern dropped to 7-7 and 5-2. The Wolves return to the field for Senior Day on Saturday at the Westside Athletic Complex. They matchup against Keene State in the regular season finale for both teams with the Little East Conference Championship Tournament slated to begin on Tuesday. WestConn has already secured the No. 1 seed with the win today.
