DANBURY, Conn. - Junior
Isabella Pota (East Meadow, N.Y.) and senior
Madison Ratchford (Ridge, N.Y.) tallied seven and three goals, respectively, as the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team raced past visiting Little East Conference foe Keene State College, 18-6, on a soggy Saturday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex on Senior Day. The Wolves had already secured the No. 1 seed and a first round bye in the upcoming LEC Championship Tournament. They await the winner of Tuesday's quarterfinal round and will host a semifinal matchup on Thursday.
The Owls put up a fight in the first quarter as they moved ahead 4-3. However, the Wolves quickly responded and seized a 5-4 advantage heading into the second stanza. The hosts continued to widen the gap with six scoring strikes in the second and four in the third, stretching it to a 15-4 lead. Ratchford racked up her 70th goal of the season shortly before halftime. Moments later, she canned her 71st of the campaign.Â
The Wolves rounded out the scoring in the fourth when Pota buried her 70th marker of the year, unassisted, setting the final at 18-6. Graduate student midfielder
Vicky Gracy (Bethel, Conn.) got in on the action and sank her 40th goal of the year during the barrage.
Despite leading early, the Owls found themselves in the penalty box numerous times which translated to seven goals with a player advantage for WestConn. With the victory, the Wolves racked up another regular season conference crown, finishing the slate at 13-3 overall and 8-0 in league play, while the Owls dropped to 7-10 and 4-4. Keene State once led the lifetime series, 21-2, before the Wolves have now won nine straight to cut into the advantage. The Owls have not won versus WestConn since the 2018 season.Â
