BRONX, N.Y. — With the score knotted at one apiece,
Billy Untiet's (Prospect, Conn.) RBI single ignited an 11-run fourth inning as the Western Connecticut State University baseball team dominated Lehman College in a 30-4 road victory on Tuesday. The Wolves improved to 5-11 on the season, while Lehman dropped to 0-15 overall. The DH went 2-3 with three runs, two runs batted in and a walk. A trio of Wolves led the team as
Sal Visone (North Bellmore, N.Y.) had six RBIs, four runs,
Giani Chieffalo (Danbury, Conn.) scored four times, walked and brought home four and
Nick Lobuono (Trumbull, Conn.) recorded five RBIs and three runs. Visone hit 2-2 with two walks, while Chieffalo and Lobuono both went 3-4 at the plate.
Following a scoreless first inning, Lobuono hit a home run out of right field to give the Wolves a 1-0 advantage in the top of the second inning. The lead was short-lived as Leniel Rivera hit one out of left field to even the score at 1-1, before Untiet's RBI single to centerfield brought
Thomas Keough (Plainville, Conn.) home and sparked an 11-run rally in the fourth. Keough opened the frame after reaching first off an error by the shortstop before stealing second with Chieffalo at bat. Lobouno's single to right field loaded the bases, which allowed Untiet to give WestConn the 2-1 lead. On four consecutive at bats, the visitors had Wolves loaded on the bags as three walks and a hit by pitch put the team up 6-1.
WestConn continued to let the bats fly in the fifth inning with 12 runs scored, including a three-RBI blast out of centerfield by Lobouno sent home Chieffalo and Keough. Visone homered to left field and brought
Gavin Polcaro (Waterford, Conn.) home for a 26-2 lead in the sixth. In the next inning, Visone singled but an error by left field allowed him to advance to second as
Demetri Anagnos (Bellmore, N.Y.),
Matt Rowinski (Hackettstown, N.J.) and
Joe Fasano (Waterbury, Conn.) scored.
Zachary Ruta's (Preston, Conn.) double to right field closed out the scoring for the Wolves as Visone capitalized on the error earlier in the inning to put WestConn up, 30-4.
Braden Barron (Southington, Conn.) earned his second win of the season after throwing for five innings with a pair of strikeouts and only two runs. Lehman unloaded its bullpen with nine pitchers, including their starter Emill Suazo, who earned the loss after pitching three frames and gave up a trio of runs.
WestConn returns home to host the University of Mount Saint Vincent on April 3 for a single game at 1 p.m. on the Westside Baseball Field.
