DANBURY, Conn. - After notching four consecutive victories, the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team saw its streak come to an end against visiting non-conference opponent Trinity College, 11-4, on a blistery Wednesday evening at the Westside Athletic Complex. Senior attacker
Madison Ratchford (Ridge, N.Y.) paced the hosts with two goals and one assist.
The Wolves got off to a sluggish start as they fell behind early, 5-0. Ratchford finally got them on the board to begin the second quarter when she took a pass from rookie attacker
Charlize Wolf (Moseley, Va.) and canned her team-leading 29th marker of the season. However, WestConn would still trail heading into halftime, 7-1.
The hosts picked up the intensity in the third quarter, outscoring the Bantams, 2-1. Ratchford ripped a highlight reel worthy goal to get things rolling. She camped out just above the crease and graduate student midfielder
Vicky Gracy (Bethel, Conn.) threaded a pass down low to her. Ratchford then spun and unleashed a backhanded shot into the twine, slicing the deficit to 7-2. The Wolves added another pair to shrink the gap to 8-4 heading into the fourth.
But the Bantams defensive pressure and offensive ball movement proved to be too much to handle. They rattled off the final three scoring strikes of the game to earn the win. Trinity finished ahead in shots, 21-20, while earning the ground ball victory, 28-21. After opening the contest with six straight draw control wins, the Wolves trimmed it to a 9-8 setback.
With the loss, WestConn moved to 5-3 overall while the Bantams improved to 5-3. The Wolves get a couple days of practice to focus before hosting Vermont State University Castleton in a Little East Conference battle slated for Saturday at 1 p.m.
