WestConn Baseball Opens LEC Play With Setbacks At UMass Boston

BOSTON, Mass. - The visiting Western Connecticut State University trailed, just 3-2 in the sixth inning of game one and led in the fifth inning of game two, but ended the day with a pair of losses against the University of Massachusetts-Boston Beacons in Little East Conference (LEC) baseball action this afternoon at Monan Park.  WestConn lost its LEC opener, 11-2, and the second game, 8-5, to the Beacons to fall to 4-8 and see its losing streak extend to seven games.  UMass Boston improves to 7-6 overall and 2-0 in the league.  The Wolves will visit Trinity College next on Wednesday, March 25 at 3:30 p.m.

WestConn was down, 3-0, after five innings of the first game but scored twice in the sixth frame thanks to a two-out, two-run single by sophomore Billy Untiet (Prospect, Conn.).  The Beacons scored oce in the bottom of the sixth but the game remained close until the home team erupted for six runs in the eighth frame.  WestConn had runners on base in each of the last three innings but could not push another run across.  Wolves junior starter Brian Mansfield (Lynbrook, N.Y.) allowed just one earned runs and four hits with two walks and five strikeouts over five innings but the WestConn bullpen faltered.  Junior SS Bryan Birkl (Farmingdale, N.Y.) had two hits and reached base a third time on a hit-by-pitch for the visitors.

In the second game, WestConn scored a run in both the second and the third innings.  Untiet belted an RBI single and junior 1B Thomas Keough (Farmington, Conn.) drove in a run with a fielder's choice in the third inning to give the Wolves a 2-0 lead.  UMass Boston took a 4-2 lead with two runs in both the third and fourth frames, before singles by sophomore Mitch Landau (), Keough, freshman Giani Chieffalo (Danbury, Conn.), and Untiet contributed to a three-run fifth for WestConn.  Chieffalo and Untiet came through with RBIs, junior Nick Lobuono (Trumbull, Conn.) had a sacrifice fly, and Landau, Keough, and junior 2B Ryan Vallie (East Haven, Conn.) scored runs in the inning.

UMass Boston tied the game at 5-5 on a sol homer by Ben Sherry in the fifth inning and took a 6-5 lead when Sherry singled and came around to score on a squeeze play.  Beacons reliever Owen Ellsworth retired the last 13 Wolves and the home team tacked on two insurance runs in the eighth inning.  Untiet finished 3-for-4 at the plate and sophomore lefty Quinn McGuire (Monroe, Conn.) struck out five in five innings but yielded six its, five runs, and three walks.  WestConn rookie reliever Joe Fasano (Waterbury, Conn.) pitched the last three innings and did not walk a batter but dropped her first career decision.
