DANBURY, Conn. - Graduate student midfielder
Vicky Gracy (Bethel, Conn.) tallied four goals and two assists as the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse squad cruised past UMass Dartmouth, 20-6, in the Little East Conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon. Gracy broke the school record with her second goal of the game in the second quarter, becoming the all-time leader in career points, a mark previously held by Destinee Carey '17.
Other key contributors for the Wolves included junior midfielder
Isabella Pota (East Meadow, N.Y.) who racked up five goals and two assists, while senior attacker
Madison Ratchford (Ridge, N.Y.) added five scoring strikes and one helper to go along with nine draw controls.
Junior midfielder Maddy Allen (Whitman, Mass.) paced the Corsairs with two goals while graduate student midfielder Emma Terino (East Meadow, N.Y.) added a goal and one assist while earning nine draw controls.
The hosts quickly rang up seven goals in the first quarter and would not look back. Ratchford accumulated a hat trick during the barrage. Things didn't get any easier for the visitors in the second stanza. WestConn would head into halftime with a 15-1 lead. Gracy shattered the record early in the quarter when she took a pass from Pota and cranked a shot into the twine, earning running time for the remainder of the contest.
The Wolves led 19-1 late in the third before the Corsairs finally came to life. They reeled off five straight goals to slice into the deficit but it was too little to late. Junior midfielder
Grace King (New Milford, Conn.) put the finishing touches on the win when she took a pass from rookie attacker
Charlize Wolf (Niseket, Va.) and buried her third goal of the year.
With the win, WestConn improved to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in league play while
Rachael Griffith picked up her 50th career victory as a collegiate head coach. The Wolves have now won seven straight in the series and 18 of the last 19 meetings. The Corsairs dropped to 3-4 and 0-1. The Wolves return to the field when they host Trinity College in a non-league matchup on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
