WestConn Baseball Beaten By Old Westbury

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Sophomore Nick Lobuono (Trumbull, Conn.) went 4-for-5 with two homers and six RBIs, but the Western Connecticut State University Wolves were beaten, 15-7, by the SUNY Old Westbury Panthers in Ripken Experience baseball action this afternoon.  WestConn pitchers hurled six scoreless innings but fell victim to seven-run outbursts in the second and sixth frames by Old Westbury.  The Wolves drop to 4-5, losing their fourth game in a row.  The Panthers improve to 4-2.  WestConn will conclude its South Carolina trip tomorrow with a noon game against Colby-Sawyer College.

Old Westbury took a 7-0 lead after the second inning and added another run in the fourth, before Lobuono belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth frame.  The Panthers tacked on seven more runs in the sixth inning, while the Wolves offense plated runs in each of the last three frames.  Lobuono led off the seventh with a solo bomb, and both Lobuono and sophomore Sal Visone (North Bellmore, N.Y.) delivered RBI singles in the eighth.  In the ninth inning, junior 1B Thomas Keough (Plainville, Conn.) doubled and scored on a two-out single by Lobuono.

WestConn had 11 hits but the Panthers pounded five Wolves pitchers for 16 hits, including four doubles and a triple.  Freshman LHP Bryce Mackie (Riverhead, N.Y.) started the took the loss in his collegiate debut, while senior southpaw Robert Garcia (Farmingville, N.Y.) and sophomore righty Michael Jones (Smithtown, N.Y.) each tossed a scoreless inning in the eighth and ninth, respectively.  Senior OF Peter Coniglio (New Milford, Conn.) was 2-for-3 for the WestConn offense.
