DANBURY, Conn. - Sophomore midfielder
Sawyer DeSeve (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) tallied the game-winning goal with just two seconds left on the clock to lift the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team to a thrilling 10-9 victory over SUNY-Brockport in the season opener for both squads on a frigid Saturday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex.
Senior middie
Tristan McMahon (Farmingville, N.Y.) and junior attackman
Cody Suhr (Holbrook, N.Y.) each notched a hat trick for the Wolves. McMahon also tossed dished out an assist. Rookie midfielder
Joseph D'Orazio (Holtsville, N.Y.) chipped in with a pair of scoring strikes.
Junior Daniel Wright and sophomore Pierson Jacobs led the Golden Eagles with two goals piece. Wright also handed out one helper for a team-leading three points.
The hosts controlled the tempo as they outshot the visitors, 48-24, while scooping up a ground ball advantage, 33-20. WestConn also dominated the face-off opportunities with 18-of-23 wins.
The match was close the majority of the way until the Wolves erupted to seize a 9-6 lead midway through the fourth quarter when junior middie James Kreig (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) tallied his first marker of the campaign. However, the Golden Eagles rallied with a three-goal flurry to knot the count at 9-9 when Wright faked a shot, dodged and ripped a shot into the twine with 2:44 remaining in regulation. But the Wolves took a time out, settled down, and worked the clock before McMahon moved the ball to DeSeve who buried the game-winner sending the crowd into a frenzy.Â
WestConn will look to continue moving in a strong and positive direction when they travel to non-league foe Emerson College on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
