BOSTON, Mass. —
Cody Suhr ( Holbrook, N.Y.) and
Michael Zapatka (Newington, Conn.) proved to be forces to be reckoned with as Suhr netted five goals and Zapatka notched a hat trick along with a trio of assists to lead to the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team to a 16-7 victory over the Emerson College Lions on Wednesday. The Wolves collected their first road victory this season and started 2-0, while Emerson dropped to 0-3 overall.
Suhr ripped open the scoring for the visitors with a tally less than five minutes into the first quarter to quickly put WestConn up, 1-0. Emerson managed to even the score but
Tristan McMahon (Farmingville, N.Y.) and Suhr connected for back-to-back goals two minutes later. The Lions again knotted the game with consecutive goals of their own, but Zapatka ignited a five-goal run through the first two quarters for the 8-3 edge. Suhr capped off the scoring stretch as Zapatka had the helper.
The hosts scored four more times to get within five at the start of the final quarter, but four straight goals sealed the Wolves victory. First-year
Thomas Keegan (Lake Grove, N.Y. ) initiated the final onslaught of goals by WestConn with a man-down tally, while Zapatka scored twice, including a man-up goal and McMahon added another.
The Wolves remain on the road as they face non-conference opponent Montclair State University at 4 p.m. on February 25.
