NEWTON, Mass. — Three minutes into the first period,
Ellenoire Schoen (Newtown, Conn.) netted the eventual game-winner in the Western Connecticut State University field hockey team's 2-0 triumph over Little East Conference (LEC) opponent UMass Boston on Saturday. The Wolves extended their win streak to four and improved to 9-7 and 2-2, while the Beacons remain winless with an overall record of 0-13 and 0-3 in the LEC.
After Cassidy Nordman (Bethel, Conn.) inserted the penalty corner to
Madison Preston (Brookfield, Conn.) at the top of the circle, a quick pass to Schoen allowed the sophomore to flick the ball over all the defenders' heads and just beyond goalkeeper Jenna Smolinski's reach to quickly put the Wolves up 1-0 at 3:10 in the opening quarter. The Wolves drew a foul as
Kaylee Hall (Newtown, Conn.) brought the ball all the way down from midfield to the scoring circle before a pass between the legs of the Beacon defenders allowed
Erin Frank (Westbury, N.Y.) to tip the ball in to the left side of the net for an insurance goal by the visitors.
The hosts had six shots on goal by
Brooklyn Testa (Danbury, Conn.) and
Jaden Kilmer (East Islip, N.Y.) denying five total, while
Kaitlyn Biase (Nesconset, N.Y.) recorded a defensive save to ensure the shutout.
The Wolves return home for another conference matchup with Eastern Connecticut State University at 6 p.m. on October 20 at the Westside Athletic Complex.
